Music
Music at Roundwood
Music has been echoing through the rooms of Roundwood for many generations, and we’re glad to keep that tradition alive. Long before our time, well-known musicians found their way here.
The Chieftains played many a night, Eric Burdon recorded his first solo album in the front hall, and there are even stories of the Rolling Stones stopping by to get away from it all.
Many evenings still end with instruments being picked up by the fire in the Drawing Room after dinner, with friends, guests and neighbours adding their voices to the mix. Often the best nights are the unplanned ones, when one tune leads to another and the music carries on long after the plates have been cleared.
Paddy Flynn Music
It was that steady flow of music through the rooms of Roundwood that nudged me to dust off my own gear a few years back and start recording again.
You can listen to a few tracks from an EP recorded here with chef, singer and mischief maker Ted below.
Since then, the stories have continued to gather. Donovan once gave a private concert for Hannah, her parents and myself, complete with practice stage banter. Paul Brady picked up a newly restored 1919 mandolin in the library and gave it a baptism no one present will ever forget. Kíla filled the house with their wild energy, while Rhiannon Giddens’ voice carried through the rooms in a way that made the house seem to pause and listen.
You never really know who might walk through the door.
If you’re looking for a place to retreat, play a few songs, or even stay a while and record something of your own, let us know.
At the very least, it might spare me from the washing up.
